The description of this experience tells it all…
First stop: The “Museum of Dionysios Solomos, Andreas Kalvos and other Eminent Personalities of Zakynthos” is housed in a Neoclassical building at the square of Saint Mark. On the ground floor of the museum is the mausoleum of the National Greek Poet, Dionysios Solomos as well as the mausoleum of one of Greece’s most important poets – Zakynthian as well-, Andreas Kalvos. Here you will also enjoy the paintings of eminent personalities of Zakynthos, an island of rich culture, personal items and manuscripts as well as the statue of Dionysios Solomos made by the known sculptor Georgios Vroutos in 1902.
Second Stop: The Strani Hill. On this idyllic landscape, full of pines and olive trees, Dionysios Solomos -upon hearing the cannonades from Mesologgi- wrote the Greek national anthem “An Ode to Freedom”.
And now, relax under the yew trees – close enough to the one where Solomos sat to wrote the national anthem- and let the “kantadorous” -a choir of local musicians- play and sing for you the poet’s lyrics… as an ode to freedom…
